He praised the gathering for its focus on films that address &#8220;the heart, the mind and the soul.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/henrik-ruben-genz-KV-2008-x325.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5785\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/henrik-ruben-genz-KV-2008-x325.jpg\" alt=\"henrik-ruben-genz KV 2008 x325\" width=\"325\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/henrik-ruben-genz-KV-2008-x325.jpg 325w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/henrik-ruben-genz-KV-2008-x325-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/a>For once, many films that I liked actually won awards at a film festival.\u00a0\u00a0A modern Danish Western, &#8220;Terribly Happy&#8221; was named best film in the official competition. The film, directed by Henrik Ruben Genz (left), took home the Grand Prix Crystal Globe.<\/p>\n<p>A special jury prize was given to &#8220;The Photograph&#8221;, a story set in Indonesia directed by Singapore&#8217;s Nan T. Achnas while Russia&#8217;s Aleksey Uchitel (below) was named best director for his war picture &#8220;Captive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The best film award in the major sidebar East of the West went to Kazakhstan director Sergey Dvortsevoy&#8217;s &#8220;Tulpan&#8221;, which had won the top prize in Un Certain Regard at this year&#8217;s Festival de Cannes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/alexey-uchitel-KV-2008-x325.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5787\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/alexey-uchitel-KV-2008-x325.jpg\" alt=\"alexey-uchitel KV 2008 x325\" width=\"325\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/alexey-uchitel-KV-2008-x325.jpg 325w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/alexey-uchitel-KV-2008-x325-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Martha Issova (below) was named best actress for her role in the Czech film &#8220;Night Owls&#8221; and co-star Jiri Madl\u00a0won for best actor.<\/p>\n<p>Nikita Mikhalkov&#8217;s &#8220;12,&#8221; a modern Russian version of &#8220;12 Angry Man&#8221; that was nominated for a best foreign language Oscar, won the audience award and British director James Marsh&#8217;s &#8220;Man On Wire&#8221; was named best feature documentary.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/Martha-Issov\u00e1-KV-2008-x650.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5786\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/Martha-Issov\u00e1-KV-2008-x650.jpg\" alt=\"Martha Issov\u00e1 KV 2008 x650\" width=\"650\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/Martha-Issov\u00e1-KV-2008-x650.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/Martha-Issov\u00e1-KV-2008-x650-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Special jury mentions went to Polish\/Czech film &#8220;The Karamazovs,&#8221;
