LONDON \u2013 Danny Boyle\u2019s \u201cSlumdog Millionaire\u201d (pictured), a tale of a young boy from Mumbai who becomes a surprise success on \u201cWho Wants To Be a Millionaire\u201d, was named best film at the British Independent Film Awards tonight and Boyle won as best director.<\/p>\n

Dev Patel, who plays the boy in the film, won the most promising newcomer award. Vera Farmiga won as best actress for \u201cThe Boy In the Striped Pyjamas\u201d and Michael Fassbender won as best actor for \u201cHunger\u201d.\u00a0Steve McQueen\u00a0was\u00a0named best debut director for “Hunger” and\u00a0Sean Bobbitt<\/strong>, cinematographer on \u201cHunger\u201d, won the best technical achievement award.<\/p>\n

Although Sally Hawkins, star of Mike Leigh\u2019s \u201cHappy-Go-Lucky\u201d was overlooked as best actress, her co-stars Alexis Zegerman and Eddie Marsan won the awards for best supporting\u00a0actress and actor.<\/p>\n

Rupert Wyatt\u2019s prison drama \u201cThe Escapist\u201d won the prize for best achievement in production; James Marsh\u2019s \u201cMan On Wire\u201d was named best documentary and Ari Folman\u2019s \u201cWaltz With Bashir\u201d won for best foreign film. Martin McDonagh won the screenplay award for “In Bruges”.<\/p>\n

Actors David Thewlis and Martin Sheen won career achievement awards.<\/p>\n
