Rahman (above left) accepted the award for best original song written for film for \u201cJai Ho\u201d, with lyrics by Guizar and Tanvi Shah, and U.S. composer Carter Burwell, who could not attend, won the public choice award for \u201cTwilight.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. composer Nico Muhly was named discovery of the year for his music for \u201cThe Reader\u201d and U.K. composer Christopher Slaski (\u201cLa verguenza,\u201d \u201cPulsiones\u201d) won the Sabam award for best young European Composer.<\/p>\n<p>Desplat conducted a suite of his music from several of his movies including \u201cBenjamin Button,\u201d \u201cThe Girl With the Pearl Earring,\u201d \u201cThe Painted Veil,\u201d and Birth\u201d and last year\u2019s discovery award winner Marc Streitenfeld joined in an orchestral performance of his music from Ridley Scott films such as \u201cAmerican Gangster\u201d and \u201cBody of Lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamlisch had a long break in scoring feature films from \u201cThe Mirror Has Two Faces\u201d in 1996 to Steven Soderbergh\u2019s \u201cThe Informat.\u201d He told reporters earlier that he got the job because the director had seen a DVD of Woody Allen\u2019s \u201cBananas,\u201d which dealt with a South American revolution and which Hamlisch had scored, while on location making his epic \u201cChe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The World Soundtrack Awards are held annually at the end of the Ghent Film Festival, which honors Belgian and international films, with a focus on film music. During the film festival, actor Andy Garcia, who was a presenter at the WSA, received a lifetime achievement award.
