The Top 10 movies featured two Harry Potter titles, two Monty Python films and two by Stanley Kubrick (\u201cA Clockwork Orange\u201d and \u201c2001: A Space Odyssey\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Michael Caine is the clear winner as Britain\u2019s favourite movie star with five titles in the overall list: \u201cThe Italian Job\u201d (8th), \u201cZulu\u201d (34th), \u201cGet Carter\u201d (43rd), \u201cBattle Of Britain\u201d (47th) and \u201cAlfie\u201d (52nd). Colin Firth has four titles named in the poll: \u201cThe King\u2019s Speech\u201d (10th), \u201cLove Actually\u201d (11th), \u201cBridget Jones\u2019s Diary\u201d (19th), and \u201cTinker Tailor Soldier Spy\u201d (37th).<\/p>\n<p>Thousands vote<\/p>\n<p>HMV said that 30,000 fans voted in the music section and 24,000 voted for their favourite movies. The voting was widespread \u2014 60 titles in each section registered multiple votes \u2014 and \u201cTrainspotting\u201d won with almost 1,500 votes, 6% of the total, while \u201cThe Number Of the Beast\u201d claimed 2,754 votes or 9.2%.<\/p>\n<p>Warner Home Video has four of the Top 10 titles on DVD, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has two, and the rest are spread among other distributors.<\/p>\n<p>Winner Danny Boyle\u2019s 2008 Academy Award-winner \u201cSlumdog Millionaire\u201d placed 15th in the HMV poll and his 2002 horror picture, \u201c28 Days Later\u201d, came in at 21. Iron Maiden\u2019s winner was the band\u2019s only release named.<\/p>\n<p>The Oscar-winning \u201cKing\u2019s Speech\u201d resounded with voters (10th) but several other films with royal connections were overlooked including \u201cThe Queen\u201d, for which Helen Mirren won the Oscar in the title role and \u201cShakespeare In Love\u201d, for which Judi Dench won an Oscar as Queen Elizabeth I. Other well-regarded regal pictures missing from the Top 60 included \u201cBecket\u201d, \u201cThe Madness Of King George\u201d, \u201cThe Lion In Winter\u201d, and \u201cA Man For All Seasons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Comedies are well represented including \u201cLove Actually\u201d (11th) \u201cHot Fuzz\u201d (12th), \u201cBridget Jones\u2019 Diary\u201d (19th), \u201cFour Weddings And A Funeral\u201d (22nd), Kubrick\u2019s \u201cDr. Strangelove Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb\u201d (25th), \u201cThe Full Monty\u201d (26th), \u201cNotting Hill\u201d (27th), \u201cWithnail And I\u201d (27th), \u201cA Fish Called Wanda\u201d (33rd) and \u201cThe Ladykillers\u201d (45th).<\/p>\n<p>War pictures continue to have major support with several on the list including \u201cThe Great Escape\u201d (16th), \u201cLawrence Of Arabia\u201d (24th), \u201cThe Bridge On The River Kwai\u201d (29th), \u201cZulu\u201d (34th), \u201cThe Dam Busters\u201d (46th), and \u201cBattle Of Britain\u201d (47th).<\/p>\n<p>Crime and gangster films garnered plenty of spots including \u201cSnatch\u201d (17th), \u201cGet Carter\u201d (43rd), \u201cDead Man\u2019s Shoes\u201d (54th), \u201cLayer Cake\u201d (56th), and \u201cThe Long Good Friday\u201d (57th).<\/p>\n<p>Films with a big music connection are fairly sparse amongst the most popular films with dancing tale \u201cBilly Elliot\u201d top ranked at 14 followed by mods versus rockers film \u201cQuadrophenia\u201d (19th) followed by the Oscar-winning musical \u201cOliver!\u201d (38th), Joy Division tale \u201cControl\u201d (40th) and oompah picture \u201cBrassed Off\u201d (50th). Richard Lester\u2019s Beatles films was nowhere to be seen and nor were Ken Russell\u2019s \u201cTommy\u201d (1975) and Alan Parker\u2019s influential \u201cThe Commitments\u201d (1991).<\/p>\n<p>In the albums list, absentees include heralded performers such as the Animals, the Kinks, Tom Jones and Cliff Richard. Releases from the 1990s dominated with 18 tiles named in the Top 60, 15 from the 1970s, 13 from the 2000s and just four from the 1980s including the winner.<\/p>\n<p>Albums from the formative decade of the 1960s earned 13 spots but fans\u2019 memories for films from the 1950s and 1960s have faded with no place in the Top 60 for iconic titles from the BFI\u2019s Top 100 British films such as \u201cRoom At The Top\u201d (1958), \u201cI\u2019m All Right, Jack\u201d (1959), \u201cSaturday Night and Sunday Morning\u201d (1960), \u201cThe Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner\u201d (1962), \u201cTom Jones\u201d (1963), \u201cThis Sporting Life\u201d (1963), \u201cDarling\u201d (1965), \u201cDoctor Zhivago\u201d (1965), \u201cBlow Up\u201d (1966), \u201cFar From The Madding Crowd\u201d (1967), \u201cWomen In Love\u201d (1969) on \u201cCarry On Up The Khyber\u201d (1968).<\/p>\n<p>James Bond claimed two spots but only in the form of Sean Connery \u2013 \u201cGoldfinger\u201d (13th) and \u201cDr. No\u201d \u2013 and Michael Caine, despite his popularity, did not get a look-in for his anti-hero Harry Palmer, including \u201cThe Ipcress File\u201d (1965).<\/p>\n<p>Period classics from the BFI list that were overlooked in the HMV poll include \u201cThe English Patient\u201d (1996), \u201cThe Go-Between\u201d (1971), \u201cSense And Sensibility\u201d (1995), \u201cRemains Of The Day\u201d (1993), and \u201cHope And Glory\u201d (1987). Cult films on the BFI list that failed to register included \u201cThe Draughtsman\u2019s Contract\u201d (1982), \u201cLocal Hero\u201d (1983), \u201cBrazil\u201d (1985), and \u201cDistant Voices, Still Lives\u201d (1988).<\/p>\n<p>HMV said that the Iron Maiden record had broad-based national support rather than a regional focus and \u201cTrainspotting\u201d also scored well across the whole country but especially in London, the North East and Scotland<\/p>\n<p>Depeche Mode\u2019s \u201cViolator\u201d was the top album in London and the South East ahead of \u201cAdele 21\u201d and \u201cWithnail And I\u201d placed third in the capital although it did not make the national Top 20. Iron Maiden and Oasis did well in the South West with \u201cHot Fuzz\u201d the top movie. Adele was top in the Midlands with \u201cThe Life Of Brian\u201d the favourite movie there followed closely by \u201cShaun Of The Dead\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The top album in the east of England was Muse\u2019s \u201cOrigin Of Symmetry\u201d while \u201cThe Italian Job\u201d and \u201cShaun Of The Dead\u201d were the top films. \u201cAdele 21\u201d was No. 1 in Yorkshire where \u201cHarry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Part 2\u201d was the winner and Sheffield-set \u201cThe Full Monty\u201d landed in the Top 10.<\/p>\n<p>Voters in the North East picked Oasis\u2019 \u201c(What\u2019s the Story) Morning Glory?\u201d as the top album while Manchester opted for Elbow\u2019s \u201cSeldom Seen Kid\u201d with \u201cTrainspotting\u201d atop the film lists in the region and the city. The North West went for Elbow and Radiohead (\u201cOK Computer\u201d) and \u201cWithnail and I\u201d at third although Liverpool and Merseyside chose the five Beatles albums along with the two Harry Potter films in the Top 10.<\/p>\n<p>Pink Floyd\u2019s \u201cWish You Were Here\u201d and \u201cLed Zeppelin II\u201d scored well in Wales with \u201cLove Actually\u201d and \u201cNotting Hill\u201d in the Top 5. Primal Scream\u2019s \u201cScreamadelica\u201d and Teenage Fanclub\u2019s \u201cBandwagonesque\u201d did well in Scotland but Iron Maiden came first, as did \u201cTrainspotting\u201d despite strong support for the Monty Python.<\/p>\n<p>HMV conducted its poll via a dedicated Facebook page that resulted in a total of 54,545 votes made up of 63% males with 53% of voters aged below 35 years-old and just 8% over 55 years-old.<\/p>\n<p>This story appeared in Cue Entertainment; full lists follow:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Full list of Top 60 British Films \u2013\u00a01952-2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.
