{"id":3507,"date":"2013-09-19T09:48:09","date_gmt":"2013-09-19T09:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?p=3507"},"modified":"2015-04-01T09:59:47","modified_gmt":"2015-04-01T09:59:47","slug":"royal-opera-house-sets-10-shows-for-live-cinema","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?p=3507","title":{"rendered":"Royal Opera House sets 10 shows for Live Cinema"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Royal-Opera-House-screengrab-Cliff.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3508\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Royal-Opera-House-screengrab-Cliff.jpg\" alt=\"Royal Opera House screengrab Cliff\" width=\"650\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Royal-Opera-House-screengrab-Cliff.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Royal-Opera-House-screengrab-Cliff-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By Ray Bennett<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Opera House announced 10 titles for its 2013\/14 Live Cinema Season including five live ballets and five live operas.<\/p>\n<p>The season opened this week with Puccini\u2019s \u201cTurandot\u201d starring American soprano Lise Lindstrom and the next performance to be made available from the Covent Garden stage to more than 1,000 cinemas across 40 countries will be a new production by principal guest artist Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta of \u201cDon Quixote\u201d (Oct. 16).<\/p>\n<p>Future titles include \u201cLes V\u00eapres Siciliennes\u201d (Nov. 4), Verdi\u2019s first 5-act opera written for the Paris Op\u00e9ra; Tchaikovsky\u2019s \u201cThe Nutcracker\u201d (Dec. 12); Wagner\u2019s \u201cParsifal\u201d (Dec. 18); the ballet \u201cGiselle\u201d (Jan. 27); Mozart\u2019s \u201cDon Giovanni\u201d (Feb. 12); the ballet \u201cThe Sleeping Beauty\u201d (March 19); Christopher Wheeldon\u2019s \u201cThe Royal Ballet\u201d based on Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cThe Winter\u2019s Tale\u201d (April 28); Puccini\u2019s \u201cManon Lescaut\u201d (June 24).<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Opera House said that its UK live cinema network has grown from 45 sites in September 2009 to 240 sites in October 2012 to make it one of the widest releases of alternative content in the cinema in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The international network has grown from 120 sites in 12 countries in September 2009 to more than 1000 in September 2013, it said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Nutcracker\u201d, broadcast live on Dec. 13, had an audience of more than 32,000 in the UK. It was the second highest grossing film that night between \u201cThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey\u201d and \u201cSkyfall\u201d in the UK Box Office chart, the ROH said.<\/p>\n<p>More than 33,000 people in the UK watched \u201cLa Boh\u00e8me\u201d on Jan. 15 2013 to make it the second highest grossing film that night, behind \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d and ahead of \u201cGangster Squad\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The best performing broadcast to date was the Royal Ballet\u2019s \u201cAlice\u2019s Adventures in Wonderland\u201d, which had a UK audience of 40,000 on March 28 and the most successful opera screening was \u201cNabucco\u201d with Placido Domingo, which claimed a UK audience of almost 35,000 on April 29.<\/p>\n<p>This story appeared in Cue Entertainment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ray Bennett The Royal Opera House announced 10 titles for its 2013\/14 Live Cinema Season including five live ballets and five live operas.
