{"id":3913,"date":"2014-09-12T23:16:02","date_gmt":"2014-09-12T23:16:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?p=3913"},"modified":"2016-03-30T13:39:41","modified_gmt":"2016-03-30T13:39:41","slug":"tiff-film-review-the-riot-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?p=3913","title":{"rendered":"TIFF FILM REVIEW: &#8216;The Riot Club&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/TIFF-2014-The-Riot-Club-Cliff.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3914\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/TIFF-2014-The-Riot-Club-Cliff.jpg\" alt=\"POSH Directed by Lone Sherfig\" width=\"650\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/TIFF-2014-The-Riot-Club-Cliff.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/TIFF-2014-The-Riot-Club-Cliff-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By Ray Bennett<\/p>\n<p>TORONTO &#8211; Lone Scherfig\u2019s pedestrian film \u201cThe Riot Club\u201d follows 10 rich hooligans as they act out the delusion that they have class, style and taste as they gorge on excessive food and drink at a gastropub, deride the staff and trash the place.<\/p>\n<p>Adapted by Laura Wade from her West End play \u201cPosh\u201d, but lacking that production\u2019s reported comic insights, the film takes its inspiration from\u00a0a club at Oxford called Bullingdon from which privileged posh boys graduate on their way to positions of power in UK government and business.<\/p>\n<p>Scherfig, the Danish filmmaker who directed the equally lame \u201cAn Education\u201d (2009), simply observes the young men as they preen and posture and proceed to do exactly what you expect, which is to utter nonsense, treat people badly, over-eat, get drunk, vomit, break things, commit craven violence\u00a0and expect to be able to buy their way out of everything.<\/p>\n<p>Like buttocks from\u00a0the same bum, the boys are indistinguishable while Holliday Grainger, as a northern girl who mistakes one of them\u00a0for a decent sort; Natalie Dormer, as a hooker too wise\u00a0to be intimated by a group of callow toffs; and Jessica Brown Findlay, as the publican\u2019s savvy daughter, all appear brighter\u00a0than the boys by a mile.<\/p>\n<p>The film notes that these ineffectual and repellant louts know they are bound for well-rewarded sinecures as adults but it does not attempt to account for why that should be or what might be done about it.<\/p>\n<p>Venue: Toronto International Film Festival.
