It\u2019s a measure of the authority of the World Soundtrack Awards that while the Academy Awards last time nominated two of the best film scores from last year, the Ghent event has nominated all four plus one that will be a contender at next year\u2019s Oscars.<\/p>\n

Steven Price, who won the Oscar for \u201cGravity\u201d will compete on Saturday night for Best Original Film Score of the Year at the WSA with Alex Ebert for \u201cAll Is Lost\u201d, Oscar-nominee Arcade Fire for \u201cHer\u201d, Alexandre Desplat for this year\u2019s \u201cThe Grand Budapest Hotel\u201d and Hans Zimmer for \u201c12 Years A Slave\u201d.<\/p>\n

Price, who also scored \u201cThe World\u2019s End\u201d and current release \u201cFury\u201d, Desplat and Oscar-winner Zimmer (\u201cThe Lion King\u201d) also are in the running for the award for Film Composer of the Year. Desplat, whose score for \u201cPhilomena\u201d was a worthy Oscar contender in 2014, also is cited for \u201cGodzilla\u201d, \u201cMarius\u201d, \u201cThe Monuments Men\u201d, \u201cVenus In Fur\u201d and \u201cZulu\u201d (2013). Zimmer also is cited for Hans Zimmer \u201cMan of Steel\u201d, \u201cRush\u201d, and \u201cThe Lone Ranger\u201d.<\/p>\n

Others\u00a0nominated as Film Composer of the Year are Marco Beltrami for \u201cA Good Day to Die Hard\u201d, \u201cCarrie\u201d, \u201cThe Homesman\u201d, \u201cSnowpiercer\u201d, \u201cWarm Bodies\u201d, \u201cThe Wolverine\u201d and \u201cWorld War Z\u201d and Oscar-winner Gabriel Yared (\u201cThe English Patient\u201d) for \u201cA Promise\u201d, \u201cIn Secret\u201d, \u201cKahlil Gibran\u2019s The Prophet\u201d and \u201cTom \u00e0 la ferme\u201d.<\/p>\n

A highlight on the international film music calendar, the World Soundtrack Awards take place in Belgium at the close of the Ghent International Film Festival. For 14 years, the festival has attracted the top composers and songwriters from Hollywood and elsewhere, and this edition is no different with many of the nominees expected to be on hand.<\/p>\n

At the concert gala on Saturday night, 82-year-old French composer Francis Lai, who wrote the score for Claude Lelouch\u2019s Best Foreign Language Oscar-winner \u00a0\u201cA Man and a Woman\u201d<\/a> (1966) and had a massive hit with\u00a0his Oscar-winning\u00a0music for Arthur Hiller\u2019s \u201cLove Story\u201d (1970), will receive the WSA Lifetime Achievement Award. Top-ranked film music conductor Dirk Bross\u00e9 will conduct the Brussels Philharmonic in a selection of Lai\u2019s scores from films such as \u201cLive for Life\u201d (1967), \u201cBilitis\u201d (1977) and \u201cRider on the Rain\u201d (1970).<\/p>\n

The awards will be presented in the first half of the awards gala with the second half given over to performances of movie scores by former Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Cliff Martinez with a focus on his long-time collaboration with Steven Soderbergh on films such as \u201cSex, Lies and Videotape\u201d, \u201cTraffic\u201d, \u201cKafka\u201d, \u201cContagion\u201d, \u201cThe Limey\u201d and \u201cSolaris\u201d. Bross\u00e9 will conduct of the guest of honour\u2019s two cult scores for Nicolas Winding Refn’s \u201cDrive\u201d and \u201cOnly God Forgives\u201d plus Harmony Korine\u2019s \u201cSpring Breakers\u201d.<\/p>\n

WSA Discovery of the Year in 2013, Dan Romer will on hand for a performance of themes he wrote for \u201cBeasts of the Southern Wild\u201d and jazz musician Jeff Neve\u2019s score for Flemish drama series \u201cIn Vlaamse Velden\u201d also will be featured.<\/p>\n

\"Nino<\/a>The 41st Ghent International Film Festival continues today with Film Music Industry panels that feature conductor Bross\u00e9, who also writes film and TV music (\u201cParade\u2019s End\u201d), and composers Price, Martinez and Romer along with Iceland\u2019s J\u00f3hann Johannson (\u201cMystery\u201d) and France\u2019s Cyril Morin (\u201cThe Activist\u201d, \u201cBorgia\u201d) and Valentin Hadjadj (\u201cL\u2019Infini\u201d, \u201cHors Cadre\u201d).<\/p>\n

Tonight, there\u2019s a concert at Ghent\u2019s De Bijloke Music Centre of Nino Rotas music for Federico Fellini films such as \u201cLa Dolce Vita\u201d and \u201cLa Strada\u201d performed by the Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Bross\u00e9. On Friday, the festival theme this year \u2013 Cin\u00e9ma Fran\u00e7ais \u2013 also be the focus of an all-day film music seminar with French author, scriptwriter and critic Thierry Jousse and French composers Bruno Coulais (\u201cMicrocosmos\u201d, \u201cLes adieux a la Reine\u201d, \u201cLes Choristes\u201d) and Philippe Sarde (\u201cTess\u201d, \u201cLes Choses de la Vie\u201d.<\/p>\n
