I’d sat next to Miranda Richardson and Stanley Tucci during the ceremony and they clearly had a good time, speaking to those around them and chuckling through each other’s remarks.

In the bar afterwards, when my guest, Notting Hill neighbour Karen Turner, a BBC production manager, told Tucci, who also lives nearby, that she’d seen him in our local Waitrose, he urged her to say hello next time.

Jonathan Glazer, whose film “Under the Skin” divided critics but was my second favourite of the year after “Grand Budapest Hotel”, was happy to chat about the picture and its reception. He agreed with my view that his production is less a film of the Michael Faber book than it is a companion piece on the same topic. Glazer said he’d read the book just once and admitted, “Maybe I should read it again.”

London Critics’ Circle Top 10 films of 2014 were, in order:

1.
