{"id":56,"date":"2007-03-07T17:05:36","date_gmt":"2007-03-07T17:05:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/blog\/2007\/03\/07\/recalling-osborne\/"},"modified":"2015-03-09T13:14:26","modified_gmt":"2015-03-09T13:14:26","slug":"recalling-osborne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?p=56","title":{"rendered":"David Hare honours playwright John Osborne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/03\/john-osborne-1971-x325.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4636\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/03\/john-osborne-1971-x325.jpg\" alt=\"john-osborne-1971 x325\" width=\"325\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/03\/john-osborne-1971-x325.jpg 325w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/03\/john-osborne-1971-x325-249x300.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the 50th anniversary production of John Osborne&#8217;s &#8220;The Entertainer&#8221; opening at London&#8217;s The Old Vic tonight, I am reminded of the passionate and illuminating address that fellow playwright David Hare made in Osborne&#8217;s defence at the Hay Literary Festival in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Although he had spoken movingly at Osborne&#8217;s memorial in June 1995, Hare (&#8220;Plenty,&#8221; &#8220;The Blue Room,&#8221; &#8220;Stuff Happens&#8221;) felt moved to redeem his late friend from the prevailing view that he was a misogynist and Little Englander.<\/p>\n<p>In a most heartfelt and eloquent speech, Hare said he couldn&#8217;t imagine any greater honor for a British playwright than to be asked to write in memory of Osborne: &#8220;John&#8217;s plays are what you feel when you wake prickling in the dark: half-truth experienced as whole truth, intuition experienced as fact.
