{"id":8127,"date":"2015-05-30T09:09:58","date_gmt":"2015-05-30T09:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?p=8127"},"modified":"2016-04-23T10:45:04","modified_gmt":"2016-04-23T10:45:04","slug":"kfmf-enthralling-film-music-at-shakespeare-in-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?p=8127","title":{"rendered":"KFMF: Enthralling film music at Shakespeare in Concert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Sara-Krakow-Shakespear-2015-x650.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8151\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Sara-Krakow-Shakespear-2015-x650.jpg\" alt=\"Sara Krakow Shakespear 2015 x650\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Sara-Krakow-Shakespear-2015-x650.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Sara-Krakow-Shakespear-2015-x650-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By Ray Bennett<\/p>\n<p>KRAKOW \u2013 Powerful, melodic and mischievous, Elliot Goldenthal\u2019s music for the productions of his partner Julie Taymor was given full rein at an exhilarating Shakespeare in Concert performance as part of the Krakow Film Music Festival on May 29.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The two of them were on hand along with Oscar-winner Stephen Warbeck and Jocelyn Pook, whose enthralling Shakespeare themes also were performed sublimely by the Beethoven Academy Orchestra and the Choir of the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Krakow, with youthful but commanding conductor Christian Schumann (pictured below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/fmf_main_en.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7782\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/fmf_main_en-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"fmf_main_en\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/fmf_main_en-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/fmf_main_en.jpg 490w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The concert opened with Mikl\u00f3s R\u00f3zsa\u2019s reverential old Hollywood \u201cCaesar Now be Still\u201d from \u201cJulius Caesar\u201d (1953) followed by Nina Rota\u2019s sweetly melodic \u201cRomeo and Juliet Suite\u201d and \u201cAi Giochi Addio\u201d from Franco Zefferelli\u2019s 1968 film and Sergei Prokofiev\u2019s \u201cThe Montagues &amp; the Capulets\u201d from his 1935 ballet.<\/p>\n<p>Next came Jocelyn Pook\u2019s ethereal and operatic themes from Michael Radford\u2019s \u201cMerchant of Venice\u201d (2004) and Sara Andon provided an angelic solo for an Ennio Morricone suite from Zefferelli\u2019s \u201cHamlet\u201d (1990).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Krakow-Shakespeare-x650.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8129\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Krakow-Shakespeare-x650.jpg\" alt=\"Krakow Shakespeare x650\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Krakow-Shakespeare-x650.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Krakow-Shakespeare-x650-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Stephen Warbeck\u2019s ruminative and mellow \u201cHenry IV\u201d suite from the BBC miniseries \u201cThe Hollow Crown\u201d (2012) led to lush and playful themes from Warbeck\u2019s Oscar-winning score for John Madden\u2019s \u201cShakespeare in Love\u201d with Andon on the flute and penny-whistle.<\/p>\n<p>The Choir of\u00a0 the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Krakow was busy again for Patrick Doyle\u2019s lovely \u201cStrike Up Pipers\u201d from Kenneth Branagh\u2019s \u201cMuch Ado About Nothing\u201d (1993) and the first half of the evening closed with Doyle\u2019s humane and inspirational song \u201cNon Nobis, Domine\u201d from Branagh\u2019s \u201cHenry V\u201d (1989).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?attachment_id=8482\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8482\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8482\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/The-Tempest-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Tempest\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/The-Tempest-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/The-Tempest-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/The-Tempest.jpg 425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>After a break, a trilogy of Goldenthal cues from Taymor\u2019s \u201cTitus\u201d (1999) evoked regal power, chaos and terror as dynamic and abrupt chords leapt and dived in unexpected ways. Lilting harmonies would splinter suddenly into dark sonics and erupt sonorously with subterranean tones filled with foreboding.<\/p>\n<p>Reeve Carney, who originated the role of Peter Parker in Taymor\u2019s Broadway version of \u201cSpider-Man\u201d, sang Goldenthal\u2019s profoundly moving songs from \u201cThe Tempest\u201d with resonance and purity. Carney (who played Prince Ferdinand in \u201cThe Tempest\u201d and is Dorian Gray in the Showtime TV series \u201cPenny Dreadful\u201d) sang \u201cFull Fathom Five\u201d and \u201cO Mistress Mine\u201d, which Ben Whishaw, as Ariel, sang in the film; and the Coda, which Portishead\u2019s Beth Gibbons did in the film.<\/p>\n<p>Two pieces followed \u2013 \u201cCarnival Dance\u201d and \u201cDesdemona and Othello Finale\u201d \u2013 from the ballet \u201cOthello\u201d, directed by Taymor with choreography by Lar Lubovitch.
