LONDON \u2013 There\u2019s a perfect family treat available at 400 cinemas across the UK and Ireland on Easter Monday with the first screenings of a film of York Theatre Royal\u2019s acclaimed stage presentation of \u201cThe Railway Children\u201d.<\/p>\n

The production, which won the Olivier Award for best entertainment in 2011, is based on E. Nesbit\u2019s 1906 novel and it features the original locomotive that was used in Lionel Jeffries\u2019s much-loved 1970 film version.<\/p>\n

\"Railway<\/a>Adapted for the stage by Mike Kenny\u00a0and\u00a0Theatre Royal York artistic director Damian Cruden and directed by Cruden, the new film was shot with seven cameras at a purpose-built theatre at the National Railway Museum in York.<\/p>\n

The film was directed by Ross MacGibbon, who has had success with filmed stage shows such as Matthew Bourne\u2019s\u00a0\u201cSwan Lake\u201d,\u00a0\u201cThe Importance of Being Earnest\u201d\u00a0with David Suchet and Shakespeare\u2019s\u00a0\u201cMeasure for Measure\u201d\u00a0at London\u2019s Globe Theatre.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Railway Children\u201d tells what happens after a man is accused falsely of espionage and his suddenly penniless wife and three children are forced to leave London to live in rural Yorkshire near a railway line.<\/p>\n

The stage production features moving platforms, props and rail carts, and the film mixes high energy with the obvious sentiment and nostalgia.<\/p>\n

Produced by\u00a0Anne Beresford\u00a0(\u201cMouth to Mouth\u201d) and\u00a0Debbie Gray\u00a0(\u201cNorthern Soul\u201d), \u201cThe Railway Children\u201d production received investment from Screen Yorkshire through the Yorkshire Content Fund and is distributed by Genesius Pictures working with Munro Films.<\/p>\n
