{"id":8537,"date":"2016-05-30T15:57:30","date_gmt":"2016-05-30T15:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?p=8537"},"modified":"2017-06-20T13:39:54","modified_gmt":"2017-06-20T13:39:54","slug":"krakow-film-music-festival-animation-gala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?p=8537","title":{"rendered":"Krak\u00f3w Film Music Festival: Animation Gala"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?attachment_id=8538\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8538\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8538\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/animation2-x650.jpg\" alt=\"animation2 x650\" width=\"650\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/animation2-x650.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/animation2-x650-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By Ray Bennett<\/p>\n<p>KRAK\u00d3W \u2013 Animated films tend to be filled with basic emotions that offer composers the opportunity to revel in them all from the terror of oppression to the tumult of revolt, the panic of flight to the anguish of loss, and the joy of mischief to the elixir of romance and the splendour of victory all in one picture.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The music of a dozen top film composers at the Krak\u00f3w Film Music Festival\u2019s Animation Gala on May 28 reflected all of those and with many clips chosen aptly for the big screen, all the audience of 16,000 at the Tauron Arena Krak\u00f3w\u00a0needed to do was relax and enjoy the fun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?attachment_id=8544\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8544\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8544\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/animation4-sluszniak-x650.jpg\" alt=\"animation4 sluszniak x650\" width=\"650\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/animation4-sluszniak-x650.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/animation4-sluszniak-x650-300x152.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>German maestro Frank Strobel was the conductor except when composers took the baton and he led the superb Beethoven Academy Orchestra and Polish Radio Choir through three-hours of cues, songs and suites from some of the most popular animated films of recent times.<\/p>\n<p>British composer John Powell\u2019s nimble music for \u201cIce Age 2: The Meltdown\u201d (2006) kicked things off and his Oscar-nominated score for \u201cHow to Train Your Dragon\u201d (2010) came along in the second half.<\/p>\n<p>Frenchman Alexandre Desplat, who had been in Krak\u00f3w earlier in the week to accept the Kilar Award, left behind a video in which he introduced his song \u201cStill Dream\u201d, which Ren\u00e9e Fleming sang in \u201cRise of the Guardians\u201d (2012). He said, \u201cIt\u2019s a very difficult song to sing\u201d and then Krak\u00f3w Opera star soprano Wioletta Chodowicz came on and showed beautifully just how it should be sung.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?attachment_id=8546\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8546\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8546\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/animationx3-robert-sluszniak-x650-1.jpg\" alt=\"animationx3 robert sluszniak x650\" width=\"650\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/animationx3-robert-sluszniak-x650-1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/animationx3-robert-sluszniak-x650-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A typically adventurous suite by British composer Harry Gregson-Williams for Aardman Animations\u2019 \u201cArthur Christmas\u201d (2011) was played live for the first time followed by a stunning rendition by radiant Polish pop star\u00a0Edyta G\u00f3rniak (pictured top) of \u201cColors of the Wind\u201d, the Oscar-winning song from \u201cPocahontas\u201d (1995) written by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz and sung in the film by Vanessa Williams.<\/p>\n<p>American composer Michael Giacchino appeared in a video from the set of \u201cStar Trek Beyond\u201d to introduce a bold and frisky suite from \u201cZootopia\u201d (2016) and then sublime\u00a0Polish vocalist Kasia\u00a0\u0141aska, a star of Musical Theater ROMA in Warsaw, delivered in Polish a flawless version of \u201cLet it Go\u201d, the Oscar-winning song from \u201cFrozen\u201d written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez and sung in the film by Idina Menzel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?attachment_id=8545\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8545\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8545\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/animation-5-slusniak-x325.jpg\" alt=\"animation 5 slusniak x325\" width=\"325\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/animation-5-slusniak-x325.jpg 325w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/animation-5-slusniak-x325-300x279.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/a>Frank Strobel conducted the live world premiere of music by Harry Gregson-Williams from \u201cShrek 2\u201d (2004) and the composer stepped up to present the FMF Young Talent Award, for which he was a judge, to Dutch composer Joep Sporck (pictured left). Gregson-Williams then doffed jacket and tie, picked up the baton (pictured above) and took the orchestra through a rousing suite of his score for \u201cShrek\u201d (2001).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Following an intermission, Spanish maestro Diego Navarro took the podium to conduct a vigorous selection from his score to the film \u201cCapture the Flag\u201d (2015), directed by Spain\u2019s Enrique Gato and then there was a pause in the music as Hollywood industry veteran USC Thornton Professor Daniel Carlin (pictured below left with host Magda Miska-Jackowska), a Krak\u00f3w regular involved in panels and master-classes, was awarded the annual FMF Ambassador Award.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?attachment_id=8547\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8547\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8547\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/carlin-award-x325.jpg\" alt=\"carlin award x325\" width=\"325\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/carlin-award-x325.jpg 325w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/carlin-award-x325-294x300.jpg 294w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/a>There was more of Gregson-Williams\u2019s fleet-footed music, this time from \u201cSinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas\u201d (2003) performed live for the first time with Marcin Suszycki a standout on the electric violin. Another sensational Polish vocalist, 20-year-old Magdalena Wasylik, also a star of Musical Theater ROMA, appeared\u00a0to perform the Oscar-nominated song \u201cOnce Upon a December\u201d, written by Stephen Flaherty (with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens) for \u201cAnastasia\u201d (1997). It was sung in the film by Liz Callaway and Angela Lansbury.<\/p>\n<p>The exuberant scores of Brazilian composer Heitor Pereira were next in the spotlight as clips added to the pleasure of hearing live for the first time suites from \u201cThe Smurfs\u201d (2011), \u201cAngry Birds The Movie\u201d (2016), \u201cDespicable Me\u201d (2010), \u201cDespicable Me 2\u201d (2013) and \u201cMinions\u201d (2015).<\/p>\n<p>Warsaw recording artist Marcin Jajkiewicz joined Kasia \u0141aska for a breathtaking performance of the Oscar-winning song \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d from the 1991 film of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?attachment_id=8498\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8498\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8498\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/KFMF-2016-x650-300x113.jpg\" alt=\"KFMF-2016 x650\" width=\"300\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/KFMF-2016-x650-300x113.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/KFMF-2016-x650.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>same name, written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman and sung in the movie by Angela Lansbury and then over the end credits by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson.<\/p>\n<p>After Powell\u2019s \u201cHow to Train Your Dragon\u201d suite, vocalists \u0141aska and Wasylik were back to close the show with a sublime delivery of Stephen Schwartz\u2019s Oscar-winning song \u201cWhen You Believe\u201d from \u201cThe Prince of Egypt\u201d (1998), sung in the movie by\u00a0 Michelle Pfeiffer and Sally Dworsky and over the end credits by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.<\/p>\n<p>Such concerts are meat-and-potatoes for film music shows but Krak\u00f3w FMF\u2019s ability to attract top composers and provide excellent musicians and singers is almost unparalleled.
