The genial but taciturn favourite movie composer of filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, said, \u201cIt is simply very exciting to be in a place that celebrates film music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez was speaking at a media conference at the 9th annual Krak\u00f3w Film Music Festival where his music for films by Nicolas Winding Refn were celebrated along with other creators of scores both traditional and alternative.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there was a programme like his in my home town of Los Angeles, five or six people would show up,\u201d he said. As it was, organisers said that more than 39,000 people participated in the festival.<\/p>\n<p>It ended on May 31 with the gala \u201cVideo Game Show: The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\u201d at the Tauron Arena (pictured top). Another demonstration of FMF\u2019s innovative spirit, it featured the AUKSO Chamber Orchestra of the City of Tychy and Pro Musica Mundi Choir conducted by Polish maestro Marek Mo\u015b.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?attachment_id=8561\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8561\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8561\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Raiders-KFMFx1.jpg\" alt=\"'Raiders' KFMFx1\" width=\"650\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Raiders-KFMFx1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Raiders-KFMFx1-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The night before had seen a blazing performance at the Tauron Arena of John Williams\u2019s electrifying score for \u201cRaiders of the Lost Ark\u201d played to the film by Sinfonietta Cracovia conducted by Swiss maestro Ludwig Wicki.<\/p>\n<p>The concerts brought to an end another typically eclectic and enterprising film music event that makes Krak\u00f3w the envy of the rest of Europe and especially North America. The numbers alone are impressive: 10 concerts including six galas; five major orchestras; two mixed choirs; 12 top-level conductors; 170 film industry guests from Poland and elsewhere plus 50 composers for film, television and videogames.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?attachment_id=8559\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8559\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8559\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/FMF-panel1-x650.jpg\" alt=\"FMF panel1 x650\" width=\"650\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/FMF-panel1-x650.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/FMF-panel1-x650-300x147.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There also were more than 40 hours of master classes for a select 27 young composers of various nationalities including one that I did on electronic film music (see photo above) with (from left) Joseph Trapanese\u00a0(\u201cStraight Outta Compton\u201d, \u201cTron: Uprising\u201d), Dave Porter (&#8220;Breaking Bad&#8221;, &#8220;The Blackist&#8221;) and Martinez.<\/p>\n<p>Artistic Director Robert Piaskowski (striding onto the stage after the Drones concert in photo below) said, \u201cThe 9th edition is proof that we are slowly surpassing the formula of film music itself, and at the same time we are getting more into music connected with screen \u2013 cinematic, TV and computer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/?attachment_id=8560\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8560\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8560\" src=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Piakowski-FMF-16-x650.jpg\" alt=\"Piakowski FMF 16 x650\" width=\"650\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Piakowski-FMF-16-x650.jpg 650w, https:\/\/thecliffedge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Piakowski-FMF-16-x650-300x126.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cliff Martinez wasn\u2019t the only composer bowled over by the range and commitment of the festival. Joseph Trapanese said, \u201cTo see film music celebrated as an art form in itself is really humbling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Hollywood-based Brazilian composer Heitor Pereira (\u201cSmurfs\u201d, \u201cDespicable Me\u201d) summed it up: \u201cIt is a total pleasure!
