TENERIFE \u2013 A celebration of music from screen versions of stories by the world\u2019s most popular horror writer, which\u00a0 closed Fimucit\u00ea on Saturday night, featured world premieres of cues from the much-loved 1990 TV adaptation of \u201cIt\u201d by Richard Bellis and the current hit feature film by Benjamin Wallfisch.<\/p>\n

Charismatic Spanish maestro Diego Navarro conducted the Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica de Tenerife and the Children’s Choir of the Professional Conservatory of Music of Santa Cruz de Tenerife with choirmaster Juan Ram\u00f3n Vinagre in the wide-ranging Gala Concert at the Auditorio de Tenerife Ad\u00e1n Mart\u00edn in Santa Cruz. Co-hosts were Fimucit\u00e9’s\u00a0Ana Molowny and Polish Radio RFM Classic star Magdalena Miska-Jackowska (pictured below)<\/p>\n

Bellis (pictured above with co-host Ana Molowny) whose Emmy Award-winning score for \u201cIt\u201d is one of a long list of Hollywood credits, said that writing music for a Stephen King tale was simple: \u201cYou just follow the characters because he always has such great characters.\u201d A senior representative of the ASCAP performing rights organisation, the composer conducted master classes during the festival as he does regularly. After Tenerife, he was headed to Ireland, Norway and the United Kingdom to do more. Waxworks Records will issue a three-disc vinyl release of Bellis\u2019s \u201cIt\u2019 score with all 42 cues in November.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Many other world premieres were included in \u201cStephen King Night Gallery\u201d as video clips of typed words from the writer\u2019s works teased the coming terror in each selection. Prolific American horror story composer Daniel Licht (\u201cDexter\u201d), who had been expected to attend the event before his death in August at the age of 60, was remembered with high praise during the concert. A video showed Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer turned film composer Cliff Martinez present to Licht\u2019s widow, Hilary Kimblin Licht, Fimutic\u00e9\u2019s Ant\u00f3n Garc\u00eda Abril Award, which honours significant contributions to film music. Cues from Licht\u2019s scores for \u201cChildren of the Corn: The Final Sacrifice\u201d (1992) and \u201cChildren of the Corn: Urban Harvest\u201d (1995) plus \u201cThinner\u201d (1996) were heard for the first time in a concert hall.<\/p>\n

Other first-time presentations included suites from Christopher Young\u2019s \u201cThe Dark Half\u201d (1993), Pino Donaggio\u2019s \u201cCarrie\u201d (1976), Harry Sukman\u2019s \u201cSalem\u2019s Lot\u201d (1979), Charles Bernstein\u2019s \u201cCujo\u201d (1983), Jeff Beal\u2019s \u201cBattleground\u201d from \u201cNightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King\u201d (2006), Michael Kamen\u2019s \u201cThe Dead Zone\u201d (1983), Philip Glass\u2019s \u201cSecret Window\u201d (2004), Marc Shaiman\u2019s \u201cMisery\u201d (1990), Elliot Goldenthal\u2019s \u201cPet Semetary\u201d (1989), Mychael Danna\u2019s \u201cHearts in Atlantis\u201d (2001), and Thomas Newman\u2019s \u201cThe Green Mile\u201d (1999) and \u201cThe Shawshank Redemption\u201d (1994). Visuals from the productions added to the power of the pieces and, as might be expected, one of the standouts was a suite by Wendy Carlos and Krysztof Penderecki from Stanley Kubrick\u2019s \u201cThe Shining\u201d (which Park Circus will re-release in more than 100 cinemas in the United Kingdom for one night only on Hallowe\u2019en, Oct. 31).<\/p>\n

Tenerife-born singer Fran Le\u00f3n gave a powerful rendition of the title song from \u201cStand By Me\u201d (1986) written by Ben E. King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Vivacious Spanish vocalist Cristina Ramos (pictured above with Diego Navarro), winner of the 2016 \u201cSpain\u2019s Got Talent\u201d show, displayed her operatic talent on \u201cDead Can Dance\u201d, written by Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry for the 2007 film \u201cThe Mist\u201d and showed her rock and roll chops (pictured below) in the show\u2019s encore with a dynamic performance of AC\/DC\u2019s \u201cWho Made Who\u201d from \u201cMaximum Overdrive\u201d (1986), the only film that Stephen King directed.\u00a0Nikiforos Chrysoloras did the arrangements of the three songs.<\/p>\n

The concert brought Fimucit\u00ea to a close after eight days of screenings and concerts that included \u201cThe Beyond\u201d (Composer\u2019s Cut\u201d), \u201cTarantino Unchained\u201d, \u201cAll About Almodovar\u201d, \u201cSoundtracks of Spain\u201d, \u201cWarriors From the Silver Screen\u201d and \u201cSword & Sorcery: Symphonic Chronicles of a Legendary Era\u201d.<\/p>\n
