Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” (pictured) led the British Academy Film Awards nominations with 10 followed by the musical “Les Miserables” and fantasy film “Life of Pi” both with nine.
Nominations for “Lincoln”, which 20th Century Fox will release in the UK on Jan. 25, included best film, Daniel Day Lewis as leading actor and Sally Field as best supporting actress.
Nods for “Les Miserables”, due in the UK from Universal on Jan. 11, included best film, outstanding British film, Hugh Jackman as leading actor and Anne Hathaway as supporting actress.
Fox’s “Life of Pi’, which is in theatres now, landed nominations that included best film, director for Ang Lee, cinematography, production design and visual effects.
Also nominated as best film were “Argo”, which Warner Bros. will release in the UK on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on March 3, and “Zero Dark Thirty”, due in UK theatres from Universal on Jan. 25.
Spielberg and “Les Miserables” director Tom Hooper missed out on nominations for best director, which besides Lee went to Michael Haneke for the French-language “Amour”, due on video from Artificial Eye on March 18; Ben Affleck for “Argo”, Quentin Tarantino for “Django Unchained”, which Sony Pictures will release here on Jan. 18; and Kathryn Bigelow for “Zero Dark Thirty”.
Nominations for outstanding British film besides “Les Miserables” went to “Anna Karenina”, which Universal will release on Blu-ray and DVD on Feb. 4; TCFHE’s “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”, Momentum’s “Seven Psychopaths”, and “Skyfall” from Sony, EON and MGM.
The other leading actor nominations went to Affleck for “Argo”, Bradley Cooper for SPHE’s “Silver Linings Playbook”, and Joaquin Phoenix for “The Master”, due from Entertainment in Video on March 11. The leading actress nominees were Emmanuel Riva for “Amour”, Helen Mirren for “Hitchcock” (due in UK theatres from Fox on Feb. 8), Jennifer Lawrence for “Silver Linings Playbook”, Jessica Chastain for “Zero Dark Thirty” and Marion Cotillard for StudioCanal’s French-language “Rust and Bone”.
The Baftas will be presented at the Royal Opera House on Feb. 10. A complete list of nominations follows:
