‘Gravity’ leads Bafta film awards nominations

LONDON – Warner Bros.’ space thriller “Gravity” leads the British Academy Film Awards nominations with 11 including best picture, best director for Alfonso Cuaron and best actress for Sandra Bullock.

The film, which was released in November and is expected on Blu-ray, DVD and UltraViolet in February, has grossed $670 million in theatres including $414.5 internationally.

Captive tale “12 Years a Slave”, to be released in cinemas here by Entertainment One on Jan. 10, garnered 10 nominations including best film, best director for Steve McQueen and best actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Con-man comedy “American Hustle”, which opened on UK screens on Dec. 20 from Entertainment Film Distributors, also nabbed 10 nominations including best film, best director for David O. Russell, and acting nods for Christian Bale and Amy Adams as leads and Bradley Copper and Jennifer Lawrence in supporting roles.

The other best film nominees are hostage saga “Captain Phillips”, which Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release on Blu-ray, DVD and UltraViolet on Feb. 10, and drama “Philomena”, which is due on Blu-ray and DVD with UV copy from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment on March 24.

“Gravity” and “Philomena” also were nominated as Best British Film along with biopic “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”, which Pathé released in UK cinemas on Jan. 3; racing thriller “Rush”, which StudioCanal will release on Blu-ray and DVD on Jan. 27; Disney’s “Mary Poppins” story “Saving Mr. Banks”, which debuted in theatres here on Nov. 29; and crime drama “The Selfish Giant”, due on DVD from Artificial Eye on Jan. 27.

The awards, sponsored by telecom EE, will be presented on Feb. 16 at the Royal Opera House and televised by BBC One.
